About Me
I’m SK – a second generation Turkish Cypriot, born and raised in London, UK.
I started writing poetry in early 2014 after losing my only child and I haven’t stopped since. Writing has helped me immensely with the overbearing grief that I carry and it is something I would encourage anyone to take up. It truly is cathartic.
Although initially I was writing only grief poems, over the years I have delved into many subjects – from mental health to love to scorn (my favourite!) and so on. You can find some of my poetry on my Instagram page.
In April 2021, I finally made a decision to compile a book of my grief poems. I always knew the day would come – it only took me 8 years!
‘Losing My Sunshine’ – titled so because I would always sing my daughter, Kader, the lullaby ‘You are my Sunshine’ – is a collection of poetry and prose describing my journey of grief so far. The poems are my way of speaking my truth without holding back.
My hope is that anyone in a similar situation will read my words and know that they are not alone in their pain.

Trapped Lyrics
I grip the pen delicately in my hand
And wait for the words to flow like silver river water on a windy day
But my lyrics are wrapped up in the barbed wire surrounding my heart
Trapped and hidden alongside my love for life
Not yet ready to form into stains of ink on a blank page…
Perhaps my liberation will be born with another day’s sun.
